Start with "why?"
From the reasons you come to class all the way to the techniques and tactics themselves, everything must be logical. Always try to understand what and why you are doing it! Don’t settle for answers like “that’s just how it’s done / because I say so / it’s always been this way.”
“Why should I train in self-defense?” — because it can save your life
”Why Krav Maga?” — because it is realistic, effective, and easy to learn
”Why do I move my head / hands / body this way?” — because that is the natural reflex; you won’t be able to change it
”Why do I strike with a certain hand / foot / and not something else?” — because it is the most accessible option, closest to a viable target
”Why do I look around after finishing the technique?” — because you’re done only when you’re safe, and you must make sure there are no additional attackers
Other common answers to various “Why … ?” questions related to the self-defense techniques we practice:
- because the attacker will likely be bigger and stronger than you, and will most likely catch you off guard
- because you generate the most force
- because you are the fastest
- because it might be dark / cold / wet and you don’t have time to think about everything
- because there could be edged weapons involved and you might not notice in time
What is your “why?” Come to training and let’s find a logical explanation that makes sense for you!
